Scout.com Semper Fi Bowl Recap: West Bests East

Scout.com – By Beth Long

In the first ever Semper Fi Bowl the West squad claimed a hard fought victory over the East 17-14.

The East squad was the first to strike, after converting a tough 4th down and 1 thanks to a Rushel Shell rush.

To cap of the same drive Minnesota QB commit Phillip Nelson threw a 47 yard strike to Auburn commit Jaquay Williams to make it 7-0 in favor of the East.

But the West would not be outdone, with 8:40 left in the second quarter QB Jeff Lindquist completed a 14yd TD to Jaydon Mickens to even the score at 7-7.

Lindquist continued his impressive day to end the second quarter, with just over 2 minutes left on the clock throwing a 26 yard TD to Vanderbilt commit Corey Batey – putting the West up 14-7.

Just when the FOXSportsNEXT team started talking about naming Lindquist the Game MVP, after only the second quarter, the East struck back.

Ignited by a 53 yard return by Virginia Tech commit Donaldven Manning, the east scored in less than a minute.

On a perfectly designed nine yard toss from Boise State QB commit Nick Patti to Minnesota TE commit Maxx Williams, the future Gopher jumped over two defenders to bring down the TD.

Both teams entered halftime tied 14-14.

When the third quarter began, so did the running clock — and with it died all offensive action. Both teams went back and fourth, until the game winning 46 yard field goal from Marshall Morgan with 5 minutes left in the game.

The East squad tried to mount a come back, but to no avail – and the West was won 17-14.
